人可以无知，但不可以以无趣，这是从傍观的眼光看的，与无趣之人对坐，如坐牢房。人可以无爱，但不可以以无好，这是从本身的眼光看的，无好之人活着，活着如同死了。人有好，人必风趣，风趣之人则必定有神至而灵，是性格中人。
广东李观云好石。我去过他家，一座有三层楼的家院里，上上下下摆满了石头万件，有大若柜的，有小如珠的，五颜六色，千奇百怪。他早年开办过工厂，盈润颇丰，数年间却驱车全国各地，千金散去，广纳美石，人多不能了解，认为是疯子，他当然晓得，苦苦斗争了十多年，所赚的金钱正本全为了这些石头！这犹如招寻民间的歪门邪道之徒，组织演练了一支精兵，又犹如斥逐于各地的孤儿终被收养。自个节衣缩食，独于山石不能廉，李观云有了孟尝君之风，全国奇石就为之而趋——这其间发生过许许多多奇妙的故事——假定石能语，石类必有言传：今没梁山泊，却有观云庄。本年夏初，观云俄然从广东来西安，携一册他写的关于石头的书稿嘱我为序，哈，观云好石也知石，石能归他也始他，原是不捉笔之人如今竟一身文雅，笔意通脱镇定！我怅然容许，遂为记之。

most people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the english language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. our civilization is decadent and our language — so the argument runs — must inevitably share in the general collapse. it follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is asentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aero planes. underneath this lies the half-conscious belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes.
now, it is clear that the decline of a language must ultimately have political and economic causes: it is not due simply to the bad influence of this or that individual writer. but an effect can become a cause, reinforcing the original cause and producing the 
same effect in an intensified form, and so on indefinitely. a man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. it is rather the same thing that is happening to the english language. it becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. the point is that the process is reversible. modern english, especially written english, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble. if one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step toward political regeneration: so that the fight against bad english is not frivolous and is not the exclusive concern of professional writers. i will come back to this presently, and i hope that by that time the meaning 
of what i have said here will have become clearer. meanwhile, here are five specimens of the english language as it is now habitually written.
